EMERGENCY RELIEF

WHAT DOES COVID-19 LOOK LIKE IN EAST AFRICA?

Webale Ministries’ response to COVID-19 is all about listening to Gerald and trying to meet the needs that he is outlining moment by moment. We know the complications that come with a global pandemic here in the US, but what is hard to think about is a global pandemic in places like Uganda. There are so many additional struggles that preparedness doesn’t allow for.

Soap is a luxury item. Our families are struggling to just get by and for some, getting by doesn’t include the ability to purchase soap. Medical care is another costly item that few are able to attain.

The biggest need, and the one that we are trying to meet immediately, is the crisis of hunger. Small store owners are price gouging more than double the normal price for staple items, (not even luxury foods that all of our kids probably request on our own market runs) we’re talking items like rice, beans, posho (a cornmeal dish that is pretty common and inexpensive), and sugar. Food storage is not a thing in Uganda. Families purchase what they need and cook for a day or two and then return to purchase again for the next few meals.

Gerald is making purchases right now so that our students and their families have some things stored up while Uganda is shut down. It is our prayer that this temporary stoppage is resolved soon.

Thank you for continuing to care for this country and people that we love so much.
